Make it make sense!
“Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah... The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, ‘Look around from where you are... all the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.’”
When was the last time you made a decision that made sense in the moment, only to find out later that it was actually a bad call? A really, really bad call?
What about the reverse?
Have you ever made a decision that didn’t make sense to a lot of people, but turned out to be wise in the end? When have you proven the naysayers wrong?
Lot found himself in the former group, while Abram wound up in the latter.
Lot picked the route that made sense. It was fertile. It was more developed. It was easier. In the moment, it made sense. But in the long run it proved to be the wrong call.
LEADERSHIP INSIGHTS FROM LOT
Avoid tunnel vision - especially in the heat of the moment. Emotions make well-reasoned decisions extremely difficult. When you get excited (or worried) about something, your brain automatically fixates on the one aspect of the situation that seems most exciting (or threatening). And as confirmation bias sets in, you’ll diminish other aspects of the situation that should influence your decision, until that one thing that excited you in the first place seems to be the only thing. In Lot’s case, he fixated on the economic opportunity and overlooked the cultural red flags. When you’ve got something important ahead of you, remove yourself from the emotion and get outside perspective to help you fight the biases that will make you make a bad call.
